Women’s equality is on the agenda in New York. Indeed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently signed a series of bills in that very name, according to Michael Arnold and George Patterson of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo in this blog post. The new laws will “provide additional protections for women in and outside the workplace,” they say. Here’s a rundown of what that means for employers:
• Expanded definition of equal pay: The new bill updates New York’s labor law requirement that women be paid the same as men, unless there is a “bona fide” factor other than sex, such as education, training or experience. “The amendments also prohibit employers from installing a wholesale restriction against asking about, discussing or disclosing wages,” they explain.
