Just under two months after Microsoft Corp. announced that general counsel Brad Smith was being promoted to president and chief legal officer, the Redmond, Washington-based company has named Smith’s successor. Horacio Gutierrez, who most recently served as deputy general counsel in charge of the Microsoft products and services group, has stepped into the position, according to a company representative.

Gutierrez is a Microsoft legal department veteran. He joined the company in 1998 and has taken on a variety of roles, including head of the corporate and legal affairs team in Europe and deputy general counsel in charge of innovation and intellectual property across all of Microsoft. As head of IP, Gutierrez’s bio explains, he oversaw a number of major deals, including licensing and cross-licensing agreements with technology companies all around the world. He has also weighed in on many global policy issues important to the company, such as cloud computing regulations.
