When company systems are crashing, computer programmers can seem more valuable than the CEO. Luckily for the human resources department and payroll, these employees are often exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, as well as California law, according to Kerry Friedrichs of Seyfarth Shaw.

“The annual compensation review also may be a good time for employers to evaluate their exempt computer employees’ work duties to ensure that they continue to meet the requirements for exempt status,” suggests Friedrichs. Here are some of the basics for review:
