Lawmakers in California can generally be counted on to make some of the nation’s toughest employment laws. This continues to be the case with the new law to increase gender equity in pay.

The California Fair Pay Act, which goes into effect at the beginning of 2016, is slated to change the way companies compare employee pay and clarify employees’ rights to discuss their compensation if they choose to. Lawmakers hope that the measure will ultimately help close the gender pay gap.
