A major power outage at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has prompted the agency to shut down many of its online and IT systems, making it difficult to complete applications via the PTO’s electronic filing systems before the Christmas holiday.

The outage, which occurred at about 7 p.m. Tuesday at the PTO’s Alexandria, Virginia, headquarters, required the shutdown of the office’s filing, searching and payment systems, as well as the systems used by examiners across the country.
