Norman Brothers Jr. credits his experience as a former Army prosecutor with helping prepare him for being an in-house counsel. Now he’s heading the legal department at global carrier UPS Inc. after the company moved chief legal officer Teri McClure to head of human resources on Jan. 1.

Brothers joined UPS in 2000 as litigation chief, moving from King & Spalding. To broaden his company knowledge, UPS switched him to vice president for international, corporate and regulatory compliance in 2011, and made him the sole deputy GC last year. Corporate Counsel interviewed him on Thursday about his new job; here are excerpts from that discussion.
