If your company has employees working remotely around the globe, you better brush up on your global employment laws, argues Dianne Carlson of Greenberg Traurig in a recent blog post. “The age of the Internet may have changed the ease with which employees can work from ‘anywhere,’ but it hasn’t changed the consequences arising from employees working remotely,” writes Carlson.
In certain countries, there is a strong onus on employers to provide benefits and protect employees. Carlson writes that international obligations can include expanded leave laws, social security payments, strict overtime hour limits or generous vacation time. “Wherever the employee lives and works, the employer is also present,” she writes.
