The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is fighting back against anti-Muslim rhetoric in the workplace. In a recently published question-and-answer guide for employers, the agency writes that “reactions in the workplace to world events demand increased efforts by employers to prevent discrimination” against employees who are, or are perceived to be, Muslim or Middle Eastern. Here are some takeaways from the guide:
• Hiring: Let’s say a Muslim woman who wears a headscarf applies as a cashier at a retailer and the store manager is nervous the religious attire will make customers nervous. It’s against the law to refuse her the job based on her religious garments, the EEOC states, as it’s akin to refusing to hire her because she’s Muslim. And if she’s hired, it’s also unlawful for the retailer to prevent her from interacting with customers.
