At first, the big tech companies were only offering lukewarm support for Apple Inc. in its fight with the government over unlocking the iPhone belonging to one of the shooters in the San Bernardino massacre. But now it looks like Microsoft Corp., Twitter Inc., Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. will be coming to Apple’s defense in court.

Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer at Microsoft, announced on Thursday that his company supports Apple’s position and will be filing an amicus brief next week in the encryption fight, which is being decided by U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym in Riverside, California. Smith made the announcement while testifying before Congress on the legal issues surrounding cross-border data flow.
