The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission broke new ground on Tuesday when it announced it was bringing its first ever suits alleging sexual orientation discrimination as sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

One of these landmark cases was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against Scott Medical Health Center on behalf of a gay man whose manager allegedly harassed him with anti-gay language. According to the EEOC, when he complained to his supervisor, the man was told by higher ups that the manager was merely “doing his job.”
