There’s a lot of confusion over what happens to the U.K.’s employment laws if Great Britain leaves the European Union, writes David Whincup of Squire Patton Boggs in this recent blog post. Whincup argues that, as a practical matter, there wouldn’t be any major shake-ups—at least in the short term.

Starting with the basics, Whincip notes that British exit from the E.U. —a “Brexit” —wouldn’t change domestic laws, but it would present a good opportunity for the country to tidy up some things. Whincup suggest that the Working Time Regulations could be a good starting point, particularly the regulation allowing for the accrual of vacation days during sick or maternity leave. The government could also tinker with employee privacy rules in the Human Rights Act, Whincup writes.
