The global sports industry loses billions of dollars a year to counterfeiting, not only of merchandise but also of fake tickets, illegal streaming and bogus social media and online offers, according to a new report highlighting major intellectual property issues facing sports organizations.
While issues surrounding the sale of counterfeit goods are well known, less attention has been paid to the struggles of sports brands and organizations as they combat ticket fraud and digital piracy, according to the report, “The False Nine: The Growing Threat of Intellectual Property Infringement in the Sports Industry.”
