How do you word an offer letter when sending a prospective employee into harm’s way abroad? It’s a question tackled by Brent Douglas of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo in this recent blog post. “Because it is so easily taken for granted domestically, an employee’s safety frequently goes unmentioned in offer letters and employee handbooks,” notes Douglas. “However, this is an important matter for HR and Mobility teams to address,” he writes. Here are his suggestions:

Be clear about the danger: There’s no point surprising an employee with safety concerns about the prospective job, writes Douglas. Advise them to investigate the culture, society and laws of the country they are being sent into. It’s also prudent to identify specific local threats, such as gang or war activity.
