Hamilton is reportedly sold out until September 2016, with tickets reselling for thousands of dollars. But producers of the hip-hop musical turned off some potential fans last week by posting an open casting call for “non-white” actors. Labor lawyers say that the widely criticized ad was likely illegal, and that the the outcry offers lessons for companies in all industries.

Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller has defended the notice, telling CBS “I stand by it and believe it to be legal.” But Linda Carlozzi, a labor lawyer at Jackson Lewis, disagrees. The casting call “basically said whites need not apply, which you can’t do,” she says.
