As flexible work environments become the norm, the virtual meeting “has emerged as the most important method for teams to stay connected, troubleshoot, and discuss any important issues that come up,” writes Paul Axtell in the Harvard Business Review. But these meetings can often feel disorganized and impersonal. Here are his tips for improving them:

Work on relationship building: Open up conference lines 10 minutes early and greet and talk to people once they sign on, suggests Axtell. Then at the start of each meeting, ask people to share what’s going on in their lives. Leading questions, such as “what’s happening in your country?” or “how’s your family?” work well. And use people’s names during the meeting. “People love to be recognized, and in virtual meetings, it helps with the sense of community that is diminished by not being in the same space,” he notes.
