The class action settlement that Uber Technologies Inc. unveiled on Thursday makes concessions to drivers, but some wonder if the proposed reforms will make a practical difference.
As our sibling publication The Recorder reported, Uber agreed to pay at least $84 million to settle two class actions, O’Connor v. Uber and Yucesoy v. Uber, in which plaintiffs argued that Uber misclassified them as independent contractors, when they really should have been employees, with the full legal protections the status affords. Uber agreed to pay an additional $16 million if it goes public and increases its valuation by 150 percent within the first year after its initial public offering.
