The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has long claimed that it can come to the defense of mistreated immigrants working in the U.S. illegally. That claim gained some legitimacy last week, when an appeals court allowed the EEOC to investigate whether a car wash discriminated against Hispanic workers lacking work authorization.
In an April 25 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled that the EEOC can issue a subpoena seeking information from a Maryland-based company, Maritime Autowash Inc., about its employment practices.
