The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs announced a final rule on Tuesday that expands protection from sex discrimination for workers at companies that are federal contractors and subcontractors.

The update to the protections, the first substantive revision since 1970 to federal contract compliance program rules dealing with sex discrimination, will bring standards for covered companies into step with other federal anti-discrimination statutes. The new rule also adds protections that federal agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have sought to enforce, but are not always protected in every venue.
