The general counsel of 44 major U.S. companies are urging the U.S. Senate to consider Merrick Garland’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a letter sent on Thursday to Sens. Chuck Grassley and Patrick Leahy, who helm the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, the GCs write that Garland’s “intellect, legal experience and judicial temperament render him exceptionally well-qualified.” The GCs also argue that a prolonged vacancy on the court will lead to a lack of clarity on “important business issues such as intellectual property rights, labor and employment law, administrative law, securities law, and many other areas of great importance to those engaged in commercial activity.
