Wells Fargo’s general counsel James Strother will reportedly leave the company after turning 65 this year, triggering the company’s mandatory age-based retirement policy for members of the operating committee. Strother has been GC of the San Francisco-based bank since 2003.
The news has shined a light on how mandatory retirement policies—common at law firms—can also affect general counsel. Most GCs don’t have to worry about such policies, particularly GCs at tech companies. But they’re not unheard of in some industries.
