We’ve talked about who came in as the top-earning general counsel according to our 2016 General Counsel Compensation survey. And we’ve looked at who took the No. 1 spot in the bonuses plus nonequity compensation category. Now it’s time to take a deeper look at a less glamorous part of the pay package: the base salary.

Historically, base salaries for GCs have been pretty stable. That changed in 2013, when the growth rate for salaries went up by 6.8 percent for the top GCs in our rankings. The following year, the number again increased, though only by 0.8 percent. The results for 2015 similarly show a bump, but at 0.1 percent. It’s nothing like what we saw a couple of years ago.
