The U.S. Department of Labor announced this week that it has partnered with Subway to help ensure the sandwich maker’s franchises comply with wage-and-hour laws.

But the agreement the department inked with the world’s largest franchisor has raised concern among labor lawyers who say it potentially exposes the company to labor violations committed by its franchisees under the broad “joint employer” standard the National Labor Relations Board has promulgated.
