We don’t yet know all the specifics of the food labeling law signed by President Barack Obama on July 29. But there are things that in-house lawyers should be doing to prepare, according to the former general counsel of Contessa Premium Foods.

The law, known as the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, requires food manufacturers to label foods that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Companies will have the option of disclosing if a product is made with GMOs through written text on the label, a symbol (likely to be designed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture) or a QR code that consumers can scan and be directed to a website or app with the nutritional information. The USDA has been tasked with implementing the law in the next two years, so there is still much to be finalized.
