Most in-house lawyers could only dream of taking months off to do volunteer work. But the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC is allowing its lawyers to do exactly that—and even paying their salaries and travel expenses.

In 2009, GSK’s CEO, Andrew Witty, launched the PULSE Volunteer Partnership, which allows permanent employees who have been with the company for at least three years to take three or six months to volunteer full-time.
