High-profile general counsel have thrown their weight behind a recent American Bar Association resolution aimed at improving diversity in the legal profession. And their efforts are already paying off.
The chief legal officers at 24 Fortune 1000 companies emailed a letter on Sept. 7 to their in-house colleagues at other Fortune 1000 companies asking them to support ABA Resolution 113, which urges corporate clients to direct a greater percentage of the legal services they purchase to law firms that show real progress on diversity. The letter also encourages CLOs to have their outside law firms complete a survey about diversity at every level of the firm, from the associate ranks to management, and then use the results as a factor in determining what firms to assign work to.
