It’s obvious why a law firm would want a nice website: business development. But do legal departments at companies need web sites too? Plenty of general counsel seem to think so, judging by the growing number of internal web sites they are launching in order to improve their relationships with business-side colleagues.

One company jumping on the trend is General Electric. In August, it launched an intranet site for its global law and policy department. The website, which is available to the roughly 4,500 people in the department, offers features like a stream of relevant news articles, information on outside counsel and a global directory of in-house counsel that explains who has experience dealing with which suppliers, customers and regulators.
