As was widely expected, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed Thursday to decide whether the government’s ban on “disparaging” trademarks violates the First Amendment.

The tougher question now is what the court will do with Simon Tam’s quest to register his dance band “The Slants.” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected his application on the ground it would offend some Asian-Americans.
