Lee Cheng, the longtime top lawyer at Newegg Inc. and an outspoken critic of the patent system, has made a big career move.

Cheng wrote in an email on Monday that he has left Newegg for the Nashville-based guitar manufacturer Gibson Brands Inc. Cheng’s title at Gibson is chief operating officer, which suggests that his duties won’t be limited to legal work.
