The former general counsel of The Pennsylvania State University took the witness stand on Tuesday in a defamation case brought against the school by former assistant football coach Mike McQueary, who says he was vilified as a liar after blowing the whistle on the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

In the fallout from the scandal, state prosecutors charged athletic director Tim Curley and vice president for business and finance Gary Schultz with perjury, failure to properly report suspected abuse and other offenses. On the day the charges were announced, November 5, 2011, then-president Graham Spanier said in a statement that the charges were “groundless” and that he had “complete confidence in how they handled the allegations about [Sandusky].” The statement was later updated to include direct quotes from defense lawyers for Curley and Schultz.
