Nonstaff instructors at a Manhattan yoga studio are independent contractors and not employees eligible for state unemployment insurance benefits, New York’s highest court decided Tuesday.

The Court of Appeals’ 4-2 ruling Oct. 25 in Matter of Yoga Vida NYC, 130, represented the latest turn in a case that also caused differences of opinion during the review process at the state Labor Department.
