When facing off against big-name companies, plaintiffs will occasionally threaten to go to the media if their demands aren’t met. It’s a scare tactic, but for Robert Slevin, associate general counsel at Verizon Communications Inc., caving in to such an ultimatum is not an option.

On Tuesday, at the 2016 In-House Innovates East conference in New York City, hosted by ALM Media, Slevin said that a company as large as Verizon will, on occasion, get things wrong. And when that happens, people sometimes make threats, Slevin said. “They threaten to drag us through the mud in the media. They threaten to go to consumer watch groups and things like that,” he said.
