Robert Bostrom went from leading the legal department at one of the largest financial institutions, mortgage finance giant Freddie Mac, to overseeing the lawyers at one of the staples at shopping malls across America: Abercrombie & Fitch. Bostrom’s first GC role came in 1992, when he worked for National Westminster Bank for four years. He was legal chief at Freddie Mac from 2006 to 2011, overseeing the legal team during the financial crisis. And in between, he held multiple roles in private practice, including two stints at Winston & Strawn and one year at Greenberg Traurig.

Nowadays, between protecting Abercrombie’s IP to reinvigorating the company’s corporate governance policies, Bostrom has been busy at work leading the Albany, Ohio-based retail chain’s legal department of more than 25 people for nearly three years as its senior vice president, GC and corporate secretary. Reporter Stephanie Forshee spoke to him about what it’s been like.
