Bar associations have dramatically limited what attorneys can say in advertisements. Josh King, chief legal officer of the online legal marketplace Avvo Inc., thinks that it’s time for that to stop.

“I’m constantly hearing from attorneys who are worried about engaging in what would for most be very straightforward communication for fear of violating the ethics rules,” says King. “I’ve talked with attorneys who don’t comfortably feel like they can have a website, which is ludicrous.”
