Despite the best efforts of one of its in-house counsel, Sears Holdings Corp. has lost a bid to block the release of data on food stamp usage by its customers.

In a recent ruling, U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, granted a Freedom of Information Act request by the Argus Leader, Sioux Falls’ daily newspaper. Sears was among the retailers that opposed the newspaper’s request, arguing that making the SNAP data public would have serious economic consequences for struggling retailers.
