Panasonic Corp. of North America general counsel Damien Atkins knew from the start of his legal career that he didn’t want to end up at a firm. He wanted to be a general counsel. The question was, how to get there? Atkins says that it was a long process, but there is an art to it.

Atkins’ legal career began in 1998 as a corporate attorney at Chadbourne & Parke. But he wasn’t interested in following the typical career path at a firm, he says. “I had no desire to be a partner in a law firm,” Atkins says. “Being in the GC chair was my initial career goal when I started practicing law, because I found that when I was talking to in-house counsel, I enjoyed listening to the problems they had in their jobs.”
