Regulators expressed interest last year in what’s in our food, and how those items are labeled. The Food and Drug Administration pressed food manufacturers for information about their ingredients, working to satisfy the interests of consumers who, more than ever, want to eat healthy and know what they’re eating.

The FDA was only one front. In July, President Barack Obama signed the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act into law. It requires manufacturers to label foods that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Companies will have the option of disclosing whether a product is made with GMOs through text on the label, a symbol or a QR code that will direct consumers to a website or app with the nutritional information.
