What do a landmark ruling upholding racial segregation, a Bob Dylan protest song and the League of Arab States’ economic boycott of Israel have in common? They are all part of a course that one current and one former general counsel are teaching on how to deal with ethical dilemmas in the business world.

The goal is to “explore philosophical underpinnings as to the meaning, purpose and value of our professional lives,” explains attorney Pierre Gentin, for 18 years an in-house counsel at Credit Suisse AG and now a partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel in New York. “We will consider how the failure to develop and articulate a clear understanding of purpose and values can lead to decisions that are professionally irresponsible and potentially harmful for ourselves and other stakeholders.”
