Social media platforms are widely used by companies and employees alike for a myriad of reasons—from advertising for the business, to announcing the launch of a new product. For all the benefits offered by these tools though, there are risks that in-house lawyers should be ready to handle.
Social media is now virtually everywhere, which leaves companies and in-house lawyers to figure out how to maximize the benefits in a way that doesn’t negatively affect the business, says Ryan Garcia, managing legal director at Dell Inc. who focuses on social media. “We’re in the second generation of social media usage by corporations … and now it’s just part of everything,” he says. “You have to make sure that your company or brand doesn’t face the risks [posed by] those activities.”
