The general counsel of Rackspace Hosting Inc., Alan Schoenbaum, made quite a splash earlier this month when he wrote a corporate blog post titled, "Why Rackspace is Suing the Most Notorious Patent Troll in America." One of the entities named in Rackspace’s lawsuit, IP Navigation Group LLC, is now fighting back.

The CEO of IP Nav, Erich Spangenberg, told us on Tuesday that the central claim in Rackspace’s lawsuit—that IP Nav and a related entity breached a contractual duty to give notice before suing Rackspace for patent infringement—is clearly false, and that he’s got the e-mails to prove it. And in blog posts of his own, Spangenberg says that Rackspace’s lawsuit is an ill-conceived PR stunt.
