Emergency room physician Bruce David Burstein asked his physician-supervisor at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla., whether he could cover a few shifts so Burstein could take a few days off at Christmas time in 2002.
According to Burstein, Dr. Kenneth Scheppke, the assistant medical director for the emergency room, responded by repeatedly asking Burstein what religion he practiced. Burstein refused to answer, explaining that he wanted to spend time with his children while they were on Christmas vacation.
