James Derrick Jr., Enron’s former general counsel, testified for the defense on Friday in the criminal trial of former Enron Corp. executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling that he made the right call by hiring Houston’s Vinson & Elkins in 2001 to investigate Sherron Watkins’ allegations of accounting improprieties at Enron.

Watkins, a former vice president at Enron who brought her complaints to Lay, then Enron’s chairman, in August 2001, warned Lay against hiring V&E, which was at the time a major outside firm for Enron.
