In a victory for its parent company’s layoff practices, Pratt & Whitney Power Systems Inc. recently was granted summary judgment in a federal age discrimination suit (Philip Medieros v. Pratt & Whitney Power Systems Inc.).

Eric L. Sussman, of Hartford, Conn.-based Day, Berry & Howard, represented the Windsor, Conn.-based Pratt & Whitney division. He argued that the plaintiff, Philip Medieros, lost his job as power systems project manager for justifiable business reasons, after finishing near the bottom of a “matrix” ranking of 10 project managers and engineers. They all reported to newly-appointed manager Jim Maus, who ranked them on the following criteria: (1) achieves results; (2) criticality of skills; (3) qualifications; (4) business orientation; and (5) interpersonal skills.
