Antitrust officials Tuesday told lawmakers it is time to update antitrust legislation, with an aim particularly at speeding up merger reviews. Assistant Attorney General Tom Barnett also urged members of the House of Representatives Antitrust Task Force to examine whether laws granting some industries exemptions from antitrust oversight should be repealed.

After being chastised for the length of time it took for the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice’s antitrust division to hammer out which agency would review Google Inc.’s pending $3.1 billion merger with online advertising leader DoubleClick Inc., FTC Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras told the committee only Congress has the power to end the delays.
