A trucker who claimed his supervisors illegally fired him for refusing to haul a load exceeding the federal weight limit was awarded a $436,900 jury verdict.

The eight-person jury handed down its decision Wednesday in favor of driver Michael Kennedy. Most of the $425,000 verdict was for punitive damages, meaning the award will be reduced since the Surface Transportation Assistance Act limits punitive damages to $250,000. The jury also awarded $11,900 in noneconomic and economic damages.

Kennedy, one of the more experienced drivers for the Harwinton-based Supreme Forest Products Inc. and Supreme Industries Inc., claimed he was fired for twice refusing to drive his truck with more than 80,000 pounds of gross vehicle weight. Kennedy said the companies violated provisions of STAA and sued them in U.S. District Court in December 2014.
