A federal judge Wednesday afternoon sentenced former longtime trusts and estates attorney Robert Barry to 21 months in prison for his role in defrauding an elderly woman, and later her estate, of $2.4 million.

U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny ordered Barry to serve the sentence and then three years of supervised release, the first six months of which the former attorney must serve in home confinement. He also ordered Barry to pay $2.4 million to the victim's estate and $1.5 million to residual beneficiaries of other estate clients.

Barry, who was a partner at Sturges & Mathes in Southbury, pleaded guilty in September to one count of wire fraud related to his theft from Catherine Wilens' trust accounts. Superior Court Judge Mark Taylor suspended him from the practice of law in 2016, as authorities investigated claims of wrongdoing against the well-known attorney.
