McCarter & English Receives Pro Bono Award

McCarter & English received the American Bar Association’s 2019 Pro Bono Publico Award during the ABA’s Annual Meeting Aug. 10 in San Francisco.

The Pro Bono Publico Award is the top honor given by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, recognizing outstanding commitment to providing free legal services to underserved people and communities. McCarter was one of two law firms and three individuals to be honored.

McCarter lawyers dedicate tens of thousands of hours each year to unmet legal needs including work for veterans, asylum-seekers, victims of human trafficking, transactional services for nonprofits, cutting-edge civil and constitutional rights cases and animal rights.

In 2018, a team of partners traveled to rural Georgia to serve people held in immigration detention. The team represented several people and secured a client’s release via an appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals.

Also in 2018, the firm launched the McCarter & English Pro Bono Fellowship for the City of Newark, which dedicates a full-time attorney to a designated area of urgent unmet housing-related legal needs in Newark, New Jersey.

Mike Kelly, the firm’s chair, said: “It was a wonderful surprise to hear we had been selected for the ABA’s Pro Bono Publico award this year. I have never been prouder of this firm. Service to those in need is central to the firm’s identity, and expanding our pro bono practice has been one of my top priorities since becoming chair.”

Together with Connecticut Legal Services, McCarter’s Stamford office recently launched a clinic to assist applicants seeking pardons under state law. The firm’s Stamford and Hartford offices also work with the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center to assist military veterans with disability claims and appeals. The offices also provide assistance to homeless veterans.

Moy N. Ogilvie, managing partner of McCarter’s Hartford office and 2019 Connecticut Law Tribune Attorney of the Year finalist, said, “We take on pro bono matters because these cases make a real, meaningful difference in the day-to-day lives of underserved men and women. Offering legal aid for veterans who have been left behind has been a transformative, eye-opening experience for McCarter’s attorneys, and we look forward to continuing our work to serve Connecticut’s most vulnerable individuals and communities.”
