When former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the National Anthem to protest racism, President Donald Trump demanded that the NFL “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now!” In President Trump’s vernacular: “He’s fired!” To which Mr. Kaepernick’s mother responded: “I guess that makes me a proud bitch.”

While this was a pithy retort, the best response has been provided by the United Sates Supreme Court in the case of West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.
