Called a mentor, a woman of many firsts and someone who enjoyed representing her lower-middle-class clients as staff attorney and then executive director of the New Haven Legal Assistance Association, Patricia Kaplan died Sunday.

A Branford resident, Kaplan died of complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was 81 years old.
