“The indefinite suspension of jury trials in this state not only tramples upon the speedy trial and due process rights of every criminal defendant awaiting trial, but also the rights of every victim to a timely disposition of the case. Indeed, the continued suspension of jury trials—while the rest of Connecticut has been cleared to reopen—threatens the very heart of our system of justice.”

Those sentences appear in the opening paragraph of an application for a “public interest” appeal that was filed in the Connecticut Supreme Court on May 14, 2021. The appeal was filed by public defenders on behalf of Sergio Correa, an accused triple murderer.
