The doctrine of superseding cause was at the crux of a Connecticut Appellate Court ruling Friday that upheld a lower court decision that the Shoppes at Buckland Hills and the mall’s security arm, AlliedBarton Security Services, weren’t responsible for the injuries an off-duty East Granby police officer sustained trying to apprehend alleged shoplifters in the mall parking lot.

In a 3-0 ruling written by Justice Ingrid Moll, the court affirmed a jury ruling that found both the mall and AlliedBarton weren’t at fault for officer Charles Allen’s injuries sustained in May 2014.
